Fatal Accident In City
One youth was killed and two others injured when this car struck a pole in Pages road, near Bickerton street about 2 p.m. yesterday. The dead youth was:
Murray Ross Smith, aged 17, a labourer, of 478 Pages road, Aranui, a son of Mr and Mrs G. Smith.
The car was being driven towards the city. Outside Cowles stadium it hit a pole on the left side of the road. Smith, who was sitting in the front passenger’s seat, suf-
fered severe head injuries and was dead when he was taken to the Christchurch Hospital by a St. John ambulance.
Barry William Armstrong, aged 18, of 123 Shortland street, the driver of the car, suffered moderately serious head injuries and a fractured jaw. He was admitted to Burwood Hospital. His brother, Trevor Armstrong, aged 16, of 123 Shortland street, who w’as in the back seat, suffered moderately serious head injuries
and a broken arm. He was admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital. The car was extensively damaged. The radiator was pushed back more than a foot into the engine. The steering wheel was bent up to the roof, both doors were buckled and the passenger’s side windscreen was shattered. Members of the motor accident inquiry branch at the Central Police Station want to interview anyone who saw the accident
