BUMPER CROP
Apple Glut Feared (Special Crtpdt. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, Oct. 30. British apple growers are pressing the Government for a reduction in the apple import quota in the first half of next year. This is because the home crop this year has been a record 630,000 tons. A surplus of dessert and cooking apples is reported and prices for the most popular varieties are well down on last year. Stores in all fruit-grow-ing areas are crammed. The “Daily Express” says apple crops in France and Italy have been heavy this year. Most of their exports to Britain are expected in January and February. The Americans are also threatening to increase apple exports early in the year. This is just when British stored apples will be pouring on to the market. Fruit farmers say millions of pounds could be saved by keeping out foreign apples Britain does not need, or insisting that shipments are held back until her own crop has been cleared.
