PROPOSED PARK
Council Offers £4OOO The Heathcote County Council last evening approved the purchase of the H. A. Young estate in Cashmere road for a park and children’s playground providing the council’s proportion of the cost of the property does not exceed £4OOO. At last month’s meeting, a deputation representing a committee of residents in the area asked the council to contribute £Booo—half the total purchase price. The committee would aim to raise the remaining £6OOO. Councillors inspected the land last week-end. After Cr. C. M. A. Thompson moved that the council approve the purchase of the land, the chairman (Mr C. D. Le Comte) said the spirit of the people on the committee should be commended. Cr. L. L. Smith said he hoped residents would now rally around to assist. Asked by “The Press” to comment on the council’s decision, Mr H. Cordery, a member of the committee, said he was sure the committee would be gratified. However, the question of meeting the £BOOO gap would have to be discussed at an early meeting.
