BURIED BY EARTH
Rescue Bid Fails (N.Z Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 21. Three bushmen made a desperate but unsuccessful bid to save a workmate who was buried in a landslide deep In bush at Tataraklno. between Napier and Taupo, at 3 p.m. today. The man. whose name was not available for publication tonight, was dead when his three friends uncovered him. He was a Scot, aged 42. According to the Taupo police, the man was walking across a newly excavated face of earth on a new road about 60 miles from Taupo when it began to slide and engulfed him.
His three friends immediately tried to save him by using a bulldozer to clear the earth away. Later, they abandoned the machine and used shovels. The body was found not far from the surface of the slide. It is believed he died almost immediately.
