DAMAGES AWARDS

Juries ‘Often Out Of Touch’ (N.Z. Press Association) HAWERA, October 21. Huge awards made by some juries in death and personal injury claims were often "quite out of touch with the realities of the situation,” the chairman of directors of the North Island Motor Union Insurance Company (Mr F. G. Farrell) said in a supplementary report to the company’s annual meeting in Hawera last night. Many members of these juries were motor-vehicle owners themselves but often they appeared to forget that any “excessive generosity” in the award of damages had to be paid for out of the pockets of the motorists because it was the motorist who eventually had to foot the bill in premium increases.
