SPRINKLERS IN CINEMAS

Suggestion For By-Law If single-storey, picture theatres should have firesprinkler systems, so also should public halls, said Cr. R. W I. Harrington at a meeting of the Riccarton Borough Council last evening. The council had received a letter from the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board drawing attention to the fire risk in theatres and to the fact that only one theatre in Christchurch had a sprinkler system. The board asked the council to consider providing a by-law for the installation of sprinkler systems in cinemas. Cr. Harrington said he did not think there was as much risk with a single-storey theatre as with theatres with several floors and poor egress. The council decided to initiate discussions on the subject with the Christchurch City Council.
