Invitation From Russia Declined

(New Zealand Press Association)

GREYMOUTH, September 28. New Zealand miners have declined by a large majority an invitation from Russia for two members to make a friendly visit to the Soviet Union in late Novertiber or December.

The invitation was made to the United Mineworkers of New Zealand, which in a nation-wide ballot of members of the various miners’ unions, asked if they were in favour of accepting. The returning officer, Mr J. T. L. McPhee, of Runanga, tonight announced that 707 had voted “yes” and 1442 had voted “no,” with 17 informal votes.

Of the 24 miners’ unions in New Zealand, ballots were not carried out by two, and the return of another was not to hand. The number of votes involved was small, and could not affect the result, said Mr McPhee. He would advise the United Mineworkers accordingly.
