Union Sees Wage Order Nullified

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 28. The effect of the 6 per cent general wage order will be nullified by the end of the first quarter of 1965, the North Island Electrical Workers’ Union has told the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake).

The union expressed concern at the rapid increase in the cost of living over recent months in a letter to the Prime Minister. The union said some businesses increased the price of their goods in anticipation of a general order. It predicted that unless the Government took some positive action to stabilise prices, the effect of the order would be nullified by the end of the year, or certainly by the end of the first quarter of 1965. The union urged the Government to impress on the business community the need to refrain from increasing prices, and endeavour to absorb the effect of the increase into the present cost structure. The union said this was. not impossible". Increased profits

were being made by most businesses opera ting within New Zealand.

The union's secretary (Mr A. J. Neary) said today the Government had not yet replied to the letter. “This shows a lack of concern on the Government’s part over what is happening,” he said.
