CAR GUTTED BY FIRE

Family Lose Possessions . While a car driven by Mr W. Nightingale, of 14 Mooray avenue, Christchurch, was travelling south on the Main North road through the Hundalees about 6.30 p.m. on Tuesday flames burst through the floorboards. The car was destroyed. Mr Nightingale, his wife and their 10-year-old daughtera. Judith, lost most of their clothing and all their possessions which were in the car. A number of vehicles pulled up, but several fire extinguishers which were carried in them would not work. Mr Nightingale said he had obtained a warrant of fitness at Kaiapoi a few days before. He attempted to get some of his property from the car, but was held back by by-standers. The incident occurred about 22 miles south of Kaikoura. Yesterday afternoon Mr Nightingale said he wanted to thank all the persons who had assisted him and especially the proprietor and staff of the Pier Hotel, Kaikoura. where his wife and child were taken after the car had been destroyed.

Industries Fair.—Yesterday’s attendance at the New Zealand Industries Fair brought the total to 44,648. The attendance yesterday was 5893, compared with 3329 on the corresponding day last year.
