SCHOOLS’ HOCKEY Christchurch B.H.S. 7-1 Winner In Final
On a ground made slippery on top by rain, Christchurch B.H.S. won the Rankin Cup in the Christchurch section of the New Zealand secondary schools’ hockty tournament by defeating Auckland Grammar, 7-1, yesterday. The game did not quite reach the expected standard. The winning team’s short passing suffered from indifferent trapping and slow passing at crucial times, and the Auckland Gram mar team lacked sufficient ability in these skills to take advantages of the lapses. At no stage of the game did the Auckland team function as a cohesive unit. The domination of the three Christchurch inside forwards— T. Burrows’s sure and calm passing, B. Maister’s bewildering dribbling, and J. Christensen’s stick-work —set the Auckland defence a difficult task which it never really mastered. Excellent goal-keeping by P. R. Rikys kept the score to a minimum. Auckland had its chances on many occasions but its forwards lacked the passing ability of their counterparts, for the Christchurch defence made sufficient errors to have allowed a good forward line to score more than the one penalty corner.
At the conclusion of the game the following representative team was announced by the selectors (Messrs G. Maister and C. V. Walter):—P. R. Rikys. B. Gascoign, D. Coldham (Auckland Grammar): A. Silson (Hutt Valley), R. Greenaway (Christchurch West), N. Mac Gibbon
(St. Andrew’s); G. Marshall, E. Holstein. J. Christensen. B Malster, T. Burrows (Christchurch 8.H.5.). Emergencies: W. Wright (Hamilton H.S.), and F. Mailman (Wanganui H.S.).
