Co-operation In Fish Studies

(From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, August 27. The Marine Department is considering a request for collaboration with the University of Canterbury and financial assistance for its zoology department studies on fish.

The Minister of Marine (Mr Scott) told Parliament today that Professor G. A. Knox had proposed this aid for the extension of studies to de-

termine species, seasonal distribution on occurrence, availability and other topics. Mr D. Maclntyre (Govt., Hastings) had asked Mr Scott what steps were being taken to help further research on how to catch and market fish which had been sighted by N.A.C. freight aircraft pilots off the north-east coast of the South Island. Mr Maclntyre referred to a report in “The Press” of the sightings of “huge shoals of small fish with attendant larger fish.” Mr Scott replied that over the last year N.A.C. pilots had co-operated with the zoology department of the university in recording shoals, concentrations of seabirds, and dolphins on their flights between Wellington and Christchurch. A decision on assistance from his department could be available within a month, said Mr Scott.
