SCHOOLS HOCKEY Leaders Win After Hard Struggle
The Christchurch section of the New Zealand secondary schools’ hockey tournament continued in fine weather and on very hard grounds yesterday. Most games were characterised by hard hitting and little appreciation of passing, skill being sacrificed for speed.
Although no major upsets occurred, several fancied teams were hard put to maintain their positions as section leaders. Auckland Grammar was a trifle lucky to win, 2-0, against the second Christchurch Boys’ High School team and in the afternoon the same team fought desperately to hold off a vigorous assault from Wanganui. Hamilton High School had surprising difficulty in drawing with Linwood B in the morning and only gained the ascendancy over Greymouth late in the afternoon game.
King’s College from Auckland showed more ability yesterday but after leading, 2-0, against Shirley at half-time, allowed the local team to fight back to a 2-all draw.
The morning games today should produce some titanic struggles. In section A Hutt Valley has to defeat Auckland Grammar to win the section, while in section B, Hamilton requires a win over Taumarunui to go into the semi-finals. In section C, King’s College has to defeat Christchurch West to win semi-final status. Christchurch Boys’ High School A seems assured of a place in the semi-finals and its constructive hockey could carry it to an ultimate victory in the tournament.
