TOURNEY AT NAPIER

Linwood H.S. Unbeaten (N.Z. Press Association) NAPIER, August 25. Th« Napier section of the New Zealand secondary schools hockey tournament began today on firm, fast s grounds and in ideal weather conditions.

Christchurch and Nelson schools had a reasonably successful day. Waimea College and Linwood High School were undefeated and Cashmere High had a win and a loss.

Waimea College, playing New Plymouth, carried too many guns for the Taranaki team, its powerful forwards producing a steady stream of goals for D. Gribble (6), A. McCarthy (5) and C. Gass. In the afternoon against Mount Albert, Waimea again won convincingly, with a first-class team effort. Goals for Waimea were scored by Gribble (3), Gass (2), and C. Dickinson. Cashmere, in the morning, played disappointingly against Northland, but in the afternoon had a slight but decisive advantage against St. Kentigerns College. Scorers for Cashmere were B. Moore and G. Kendall. Linwood had a bye in the afternoon, and in the morning against Kelston started shakily, the long, hard hitting of the Auckland team being difficult to counter. But in the second half, Linwood concentrated on a short-pass-ing game and penetrated the stubborn Kelston defence on many occasions.

M. Lumsden played outstandingly for Linwood, to score four goals. Other scorers were G. Bhana (2), and L. Hutchinson. Results:— Napier Boya’ High School S, Kings High 2; Waimea College 12, New Plymouth 0; Northland College 4, Cashmere High 0; St. Kentigerns 3, Lindisfarne 2; Linwood High 6, Kuranul 1. Waimea College 6, Mount Albert Grammar 3; Kings High 4, New Plymouth 1: Lindisfarne 3, Colenso 2; Cashmere 2, St. Kentigerns 0; Hastings 4, Kuranui 3; Wellington 5, Kelston 1.
