FALL FROM TRAIN

Man, Aged 84, Injured

An 84-year-old man who tried to board a moving train at Opawa railway station yesterday afternoon suffered severe head injuries when he slipped and was struck by the under part of a carriage. The man, Mr Jules Ramon, of 30 Flavell street, Heathcote, was taken to hospital by ambulance. He was operated on at the Princess Margaret Hospital last night. His condition was later reported to be fair.

The 2.10 p.m. ChristchurchLyttelton passenger train, drawn by an electric locomotive, was pulling out of the Opawa station when Mr Ramon tried to board it. He had been at the Opawa shopping centre and attempted to get on a carriage from the side opposite the station platform. A passenger on the train endeavoured to help Mr Ramon aboard, but he slipped and fell alongside the track. Mr Ramon attempted to get up and was struck by a carriage. The passenger jumped from the tram and held Mr Ramon down until the remaining carriages had passed him. The guard saw the passenger holding Mr Ramon down and stopped the train. Mr Ramon was bleeding extensively from lacerations, and was shocked, but conscious.
