Blenheim Road

Sir, —It may be too much to expect public authorities always to be on the side of the angels, but not too much to hope they will be on the side of public safety. I refer to the decision of the Paparua County Council to complain to No. 11 District Roads Council about the median strip in Blenheim road. While not asking for its removal, their action will no doubt be regarded as support by those objectors who do. The median strip effectively deters those who would cross the double line while overtaking—a dangerous practice seen too frequently on Blenheim road. In case of accident, the strip tends to prevent cars out of control from colliding with the opposing traffic stream. Median strips are standard practice on this type of highway overseas, and in many places it is a traffic offence to cross a double centre-line in any circumstances except involuntarily.—Yours, etc., M.G. August 4, 1964.
