Noise On Sunday

Sir,— Among the prejudices of our forbears was one against noise on Sunday. To a generation accustomed to tolerating Harvards and traffic noise on six days—and nights—a week, this seems quaint. After a Sunday afternoon spent listening to the shriek of go-karts racing at Carr’s road, Halswell, however, 1 am inclined to credit our grandparents with more common sense than we have. Compared with go-karts on a Sunday afternoon, the sound of the hand lawnmower to which they objected seems a nostalgic memory. It appears time to object Could you tell me what legal remedy, if any, there is against torturing of the air space of a whole suburb on a Sunday. It may be the pleasure of a few; it is the irritation of a district.—Yours, etc., S. W. RICHARDS. Halswell, August 2, 1964.
