“Wash-Day At The Pa”

Sir,—From “East Coast Village," a bulletin issued by the Education Department to schools in 1962, I quote from a chapter about two boys, Maori and pakeha, and entitled, “A Fight.” “Maggot!” “Yah, tarbrush!” “Yah, white maggot, pakeha maggot!” From this, a fight ensues. Surely young children should not read (with government assistance) that Maori and pakeha call each other dreadful names and are violent towards each other. It might cause some innocent child to say and do the same awful things. So Mr Kinsella might also withdraw this bulletin from the schools. Above all, he should not allow any teacher to put this sort of thing into perspective.— Yours, etc., HOW SILLY CAN YOU GET? August 4, 1964.
