Bus Concessions Sought For Lyttelton Residents
Concern that aged residents of Lyttelton were ineligible for the Transport Board’s special concession rates was expressed at a meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council by Cr. G. E. Boyd last evening. The concessions for the aged did not apply to residents living in Lyttelton, she said, as the area was out of the board’s rating district. The council decided to ask the board to consider including Lyttelton’s eligible residents in the scheme. Fluoridation.—A letter from the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Dental Association congratulated the council for “its initiative and farsighted” policy on fluoridation. The branch urged the council to fluoridate its water supply as soon as possible. Swimming Pool.—Cr. R. H. Duff reported that information concerning cost and other matters was still being collected in connexion with the proposed public swimming pool in Lyttelton. A letter from the Lyttelton Main School Parent-teacher Association which offered assistance, was received.
Ambulance Garage.—The council decided to supply the necessary materials to strengthen the floor of the ambulance garage. A letter from the Lyttelton sub-centre of the St. John Ambulance Association asked for repairs to be done as one ambulance “keeps going through the floor.” The garage is owned by the council. New Taxi Offices?—An application by Kiwi Taxis to have new offices established in the British Hotel on the corner of Donald street and Norwich quay was received. The council is to investigate the position. Union Dues—-A request from the Gasworkers’ Union that the council collect union dues from its employees was refused. Bulk Gas.—The New Zealand Gas Council will be informed that there appears to be no financial advantage in the borough council purchasing its gas in bulk from the Christchurch Gas Company if the borough council is required to pay for the pipeline. However, the council decided it would be willing
to go further into the matter if the Gas Council were prepared to pay for the pipeline.
Library Building.— A more detailed estimate of cost has been called for removing the parapet and making the existing library building structurally secure. Staff Praised.—The Mayor (Mr J. B. Collett) praised the staff of the council’s electrical department for the way they had coped with additional work forced upon them during .the last few months through illness. Last month three large transformers were replaced, heavier overhead lines erected, and 10 new sodium-vapour street lamps installed, in addition to the usual maintenance and repair work.
