AUCKLAND FUNCTION
Anniversary Of Marines (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 19. The 300th anniversary of the founding of the Royal Marines was celebrated in Auckland on Saturday evening, when the New Zealand branch of the Royal Marines’ Association held a dinner and ball. About 240 attended. Guests of honour were three Royal Marine commandos who arrived from serving in Malaysia, Major A. Higson, Colour Sergeant J. McDermott and Private P. J. Hollis.
Speakers included th.e president (Lieutenant-Colonel G. T. Haines), the Mayor of Auckland (Mr D. M. Robinson), the Chief of the Naval Staff (Rear Admiral R. E. Washbourn), the United Kingdom Liaison Officer (Captain P. Keith-Welsh), and Major Higson. Many cables and telegrams of best wishes were received, including one from Queen Elizabeth, and Prince Philip, who is Captain General of the Marines.
