Bus Service
Sir, —A lady boarded the 5.2 p.m. bus from Cathedral square to New Brighton yesterday, failing to observe that the bus was an "express.” Ringing the bell in the nonstop section, she was peremptorily summoned by the shouting driver, who proceeded to harangue her in an unpleasant, hectoring, bullying fashion before stopping the bus and permitting her to alight He then lit a cigarette and proceeded. As an infrequent user of the bus I should hope this behaviour is exceptional.—Yours, etc., OMNIBUS. June 26, 1964.
[The general manager of the Christchurch Transport Board (Mr J. F. Fardell) replies as follows:—“Of the thousands of trips operated by the board this behaviour is the exception, not the rule. I would extend my apologies to the person concerned for this unseemly behaviour and respectfully suggest that for matters of this nature to be redressed, a coihplaint should be lodged in writing, addressed to the general manager, within 48 hours of the occurrence. This will then enable remedial action to be taken with the driver concerned.”]
