Railway
Superannuation Sir,— Railway superannuation was in existence before 1
social. security and- in some cases created barriers to any benefit from social security. The Minister of Railways in Saturday’s issue states conditions since 1948, but if he cares to delve a bit further to a commission of inquiry into the state of the Railway Superannuation Fund which reported a shortage: of about £9 million in the assets ’of the fund, he would probably realise why it may now be necessary to meet any deficit from the Consolidated Fund. I am sorry I cannot quote the year of the inquiry but interest alone on £9 million at 3 per cent would make superannuation little or no burden to anyone and could rectify the anomalies that exist today because of recent year’s inflationary influences.—Yours, etc., C. J. DEWAR. Greymbuth, June 29, 1964.
