HELICOPTER IN USE
Fast Laying Of Cables (N.Z. Press ■ Association) GISBORNE, June 28. A helicopter is to be tried by the Poverty Bay Power Board for heavy electric cable laying on the top section of the Otokd hill, 32 mjles northwest of Gisborne.
The board today authorised the engineer, Mr F. Mathewson to negotiate with the helicopter company and see if the helicopter would be suitable for the job. Last week the Wairoa Power Board employed a helicopter to assist, in the erection of poles, transportation of wire and materials to pole sites, and to run out the cable to carry power to the consumers on the Tangiwai extension. The operation was completed in two and a half days. The board’s engineer, Mr W. Langbein, said it would have taken approximately one month to do the work by conventional methods.
The helicopter transported poles from dumps, hovered over the site and lowered the pole in to the hole. It took six minutes to carry, out the operation for an average run and 17 poles were erected in under two hours. The helicopter ran a mile of cable in eight minutes.
