3000 City Collectors
Nearly 3000 collectors were busy in Christchurch and its suburbs on Saturday collecting for the Freedom-from-Hunger campaign.
The collection went off very well, said the organiser for Canterbury and the West Coast (Mr G. H. Coley), and there had been very few complaints from persons being missed by the collectors So far £10,717 had been collected from Christchurch, but there was still much money to come in and collections in country districts would be going on during the week. The Waimate district collection would not be until Saturday, June 6, and the
collections from 12 districts in the city were still to be counted.
As yet it was too early for any comparisons with previous years, and it would be the end of the week before any such comparisons could be made.
Figures last evening for districts in Mr Coley's area were: Akaroa £B7, Ashburton £1527, Darfield-Kirwee £9O, Geraldine £290. Kaiapoi £284, Lyttelton £132, Methven £320, Leeston £455, Rakaia £5OO, Rangiora £4Bl, Temuka £350, Timaru £2417, Greymouth £585, Hokitika £373, Reefton £197, and Westport £503.
