Police Selections Of Men For Cyprus
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 3. The Assistant-Commissioner of Police (Mr G. A. Howes) has drawn up a short list of 25 policemen from which 20 will be selected to go to Cyprus. There are no commissioned officers among the 25 men named.
Mr Howes said tonight he, the director of medical services, Dr. W. B. Bull, and Superintendent W. A. McGuire, Wellington, had spent the week-end narrowing down their list from 150 applications from all over the country. The 25 men, who have all been notified, are to gather on Wednesday at Trentham, where they will undergo a medical examination. About a fortnight later the squad of 20 will be flown to Cyprus by the R.N.Z.A.F. They will need no special training. The party will consist of a commissioned officer, a
senior-sergeant, three sergeants and 15 constables.
Mr Howes said a decision on the leader would be made on Tueseday morning. The only name so far confirmed is Senior-Sergeant G. Wells, of Wellington, who probably will lead the party with the rank of inspector. Normal pay will continue in New Zealand while the men are in Cyprus, and they will get a special daily allowance of between five and seven Canadian dollars. Board and lodgings will be provided by the United Nations.
