£140,523 Given To Fight Hunger
(New Zealand Press Association ’ WELLINGTON, May 3. Saturday's national house-to-house collection for the Freedoni-from-1 lunger campaign has so far brought £110,523, compared with last year’s final total of £156,287.
Returns had yet to be made from Whangarei, NeuPlymouth, Tauranga, Greymouth, Feilding and many other places, the C.0.R.5.0. publicity officer, Mr B. Clarke, said today. The appeal did not include Southland and several Otago towns, which will be canvassed on June 6. When all collections were in, the amount is expected to exceed last year’s record, Mr Clarke said. He estimated that more than 700,000 homes were visited yesterday, the average
household contributing about 4s. The largest contribution was £2OO from a home in Eastbourne, Wellington. "On a population basis. New Zealand has contributed more to the Freedom-from-Hunger campaign than any other country in the world.” Mr Clarke said. Figures for the four main centres (last year's final totals shown in parentheses) were: Auckland £35,686 (£40,000), Wellington £14,800 (£20.400), Christchurch £10,717 (£13.000), Dunedin £B5OO (£10,150).
