Dredge For Scrap

(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, April 2. The Clutha River Gold Company’s Alexandra dredge —the last alluvial gold-work-ing vessel in New Zealand—has been sold to a Dunedin engineering concern, Industrial Machinery, Ltd., for wrecking and scrap purposes. The price has not been disclosed. In recent years a number of other Clutha gold dredges have been sold to overseas interests, particularly in Malaya. But the high overland transport costs, particularly in New Zealand, forced the company to sell the dredge for wrecking purposes. Dwindling gold returns forced the Clutha company to go into recess and sell its assets last year. The 1200-ton dredge was built in 1936 by Payne and Son, of London.
