TUNA BASE PROPOSAL

Gisborne In Favour (N.Z. Press Association) GISBORNE, April 2. The suggestion that Gisborne would be a suitable headquarters for a New Zealand tuna fishing industry was endorsed by an internationaly known fishing expert, Mr T. Ochi, of Tokyo, in Gisborne today. He thinks Gisborne is ideally situated as a fishing port as it is very close to the tuna grounds and to all other types of fish. Mr Ochi arrived in Gisborne yesterday to complete a tour of New Zealand fishing ports. The original purpose of Mr Ochi’s visit was to assist with arrangements for demonstrations of fishing techniques to be held in Tauranga next January. Soon after his arrival Mr Ochi was requested by the Minister of Marine (Mr Scott) to make a report on the best proposals for the development of the New Zealand fishing industry.
