BIG DEMAND FOR BEEF

(N.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND, April 1. A big overseas demand over the last month for prime New Zealand beef has resulted in the schedule of export prices payable to farmers moving up sharply. There has been a marked jump in prices for beef at stock sales throughout the country, say Auckland meat exporters.

They say that a continuation of the strong demand from the overseas sources—notably the United Kingdom —would result in New Zealand consumers having to pay increased prices if they wanted beef during the winter months.

Beef normally shows an upturn in price on the domestic market during the winter months and, because of the great interest from overseas at present, prices this year could reach their highest level for some time.
