AUCKLAND AHEAD
41 Per Cent Have TV (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, Mar. 20. Which city has the greatest percentage of homes with television—Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch or Dunedin? After conflicting reports, the figures indicate Auckland. The debate was set in motion by Mr G. A. Paterson, chairman of the home appliance section of the Otago Retailers’ Association, who claimed that Dunedin led the four main centres. But a survey by an advertising agency in Auckland showed that city had television in 41 per cent of its homes.
Wellington was second with 34.4 per cent, Christchurch next with 28.8 per cent, and last, Dunedin, with 21.2 per cent. .
Mr Paterson said his figures should have been qualified. “They showed the percentage of television sets for each city at the end of its first 18 months of commercial broadcasting,” he said. “What it means is that television is catching on quicker in Dunedin than it did in the other centres.”
