“HARDLY FREE”

Textbook Scheme

(N.Z. Prct* Association) DUNEDIN, March 20. “The free textbook scheme is nowhere near satisfactory; too many supplementary readers are needed to go with supplied textbooks.” Mrs M. A. E. Rae. of Canterbury, told the annual conference of the Dominion Federation of School Committees* Associations in Dunedin today. In one small school in Canterbury the committee recently received an account for £6O for supplementary readers, Mrs Rae said. The scheme could hardly be called free when committees had to bear the cost of providing supplementary books. The cost of the present free textbook scheme was about 3s lOd a child when averaged over all schools. This was not enough to cover the cost of textbooks needed by some schools, she said. “One little supplementary reader costs 25s and it has not even got a hard cover,” said Mr R. A. Gibb (West Coast). A motion put by Mrs Rae asking the Education Department to investigate grants to schools for supplementary books and to pay the complete costs of books required for new syllabuses was carried.
