Black Tryax In Splendid Trial
Black Tryax raced into favouritism for the Invitation Stakes at the Geraldine meeting on Saturday with a stylish win in good time at the Ashburton trials yesterday. Black Tryax (Hal Tryax—Sans Souci) paced his mile in 2min 14 2-ssec, five seconds faster than that recorded by Sonny Jim, winner of one of the other two heats and also a candidate for the Orari race.
Black Tryax, which was purchased about three weeks ago by Mr H. S. Barry, of Auckland, is being trained at Templeton by C. C. Devine. He began safely and was third behind Bell Boy (Arusa —Gipsy Belle) and Gipsy King (Garrison Hanover — Gypsy Queen) on settling down, with Snowfall (Meadow Chief—Snowflake) next in a gap.
Bell Boy was in trouble after passing the half-mile and Black Tryax worked clear half a furlong later. He raced right away from his rivals in the straight and won easing up by eight lengths after taking lmin 4 2-ssec for his last half-mile. He could develop into the top horse of his age this season.
Gipsy King paced a useful race for second, finishing eight lengths in front of Snowfall, with Bell Boy a fair fourth, clear of Lornaway (Stormyway—Silver Lace).
Sonny Jim (My Chief—Rustic Lady) was a little slow at the start of the second heat, but he recovered quickly and took the lead at the end of the first quarter. Smokey Range (Smokey Hanover—Lady Gamble) scrambled a little after a furlong or so and jumped a patch on the track near the furlong. However, he soon became balanced and unwound a solid run, taking second, a neck behind Sonny Jim. Roydon Robin (Highland Air—La Mignon) after being handy throughout, held on for a close third, well clear of Kim Marie (Zancara— Stylish Linda) and Sunset Chief (Meadow Chief—Coronita).
- Seven Orari candidates contested that heat, with the first three to finish all going well enough to be considered as prospects on Saturday. • Sonny Jim recorded 2min 19 2-ssec for the mile, the last half-mile in Imin 6 2-5 sec. Made Pace Paranova (Garrison Hanover —Paramount) made all of the pace in the first heat and ran on much too strongly for the others to win by a length. This Orari candidate recorded 2min 19 4-ssec, the last half-mile in Imin 6 2-5 sec. He is a likely type of youngster. Far Light (Fallacy—Satteltte) was always close up and held on for second, a length in front of Doctor Barry (Fallacy—Weekender), with a break to Sensational (Smokey Hanover—Dilly Dally). Rustic Lad recorded a sound trial for the Wellington Cup when he won the first heat of the free-for-all. The time was not fast and he recorded 3min 23 l-ss.ec for the 12 furlongs, the final halfmile in Imin 3 l-ssec. Rustic Lad, after beginning well, was pushed back on the ineide until he was 15 yards
from the leaders at the halfmile. He was switched to the outside in the run home and finished in grand style to win by half a length. He looks in great order for the Wellington meeting and might pay expenses.
Sentimental, after being slow away, showed speed to finish second, a length in front of the three-year-old, Lochgair. Napoleon Hanover paced a sound trial for fourth ahead of Fox Able, Trusted and Spinster Scott. The lastnamed is now being trained at Ashburton by A. C. Amyes. Peerswick, after being handy all the way, was not knocked about and finished well back in eighth place. Maori Falla, which will probably have his first start since being trained at Templeton by D. G. Jones at Washdyke on Saturday week, gained a good win in the second heat. He was close up all the way and worked clear early in the run home. He lasted to beat the fastfinishing Lyndhurst, a slow beginner, by a head, with a length to the pacemaker. Gold Globe, and another to High Hopes. Velvet Drive was a fair fifth, ahead of Dieman Lad, which broke inside the furlong. Then there was a gap to Young Betty. Among the horses to show to advantage in slow-class events were Joytown, Who’s That, Medico, Philonian Phoebe Martial, Cloudy Bay, Admire and Mitcham.
