TROTTING Lordship Selected To Win Cup At Hutt Park
Lordship will be strongly supported to win when he contests the Wellington Cup tomorrow night at Hutt Park Raceway. This is the feature race and the first leg of the double on the first night of the Wellington Trotting Club’s autumn meeting. Lordship shares the back mark of 24 yards with Vanderford and in spite of this he is expected to be favourite.
Lordship has not raced since Boxing Day when he finished eighth in the Ashburton Cup after starting from 60 yards. At his previous start he was a stylish winner at Invercargill. Lordship is reported to have done well in the meantime and if he races up to his peak form he should go close to winning.
Vanderford could be the hardest for Lordship to beat. He won two qualifying heats of the Dunedin Festival Cup last month and finished a rather unlucky third to Great Credit and Safe Return in the final. Vanderford has trained on satisfactorily in the meantime and if favoured with a good run, he should give a good account of himself. Master Alan showed his true form when he won a sprint heat at Forbury Park last month. He received a poor run in the final and finished sixth. The Masterpiece gelding is very fit at I present and he could go close to effecting a surprise. The bracket of Cairnbrae, Grouse and Dandy Briar will be in demand. Cairabrae showed great speed and stamina to finish third in the New Brighton Cup last Saturday, his best effort for some time. Grouse and Dandy Briar are both capable of adding interest to the finish. Rustic Lad would have to be respected if he races as well as he did in the spring when he finished second on two occasions to Vanderford, as well as winning at Forbury Park in track record time for 13 furlongs. Rustic Lad finished a good second to Master Alan at Forbury Park and in the final he met trouble at the start and was never a danger.
Adios Heather, Gipsy Hanover and Dundee could also race prominently, but they should be safely held by Lordship and Vanderford. Maggie Spangler, which has had two wins and eight placings from 14 starts this season, will form a strong bracket with Thunderbolt in the second leg, the Blenheim
Handicap. Maggie Spangler came from a good way back for a sound third to Peerswick and Overnight at Addington last week. This field does not look to be nearly as strong, and if she begins cleanly, it is hard to see her beaten.
Overnight will start from 12 yards this week. He went a useful race to beat all but Peerswick last Saturday at Addington, a placing which entitles him to consideration in this field. Morsel, a useful fifth at Addington, Nigger Minstrel, Thunderboy, Lord Mina and Tutankhamen are others capable of racing well. Fine weather is forecast and the track will be firm and fast.
