Two Grants Made For N.Z. Research

AUCKLAND, February 17. Two American research grants amounting to more than 40,000 dollars (£14,300) have been made to the micrp-

biology department at Auckland University, for studies of nucleic acids, viruses and cancerProfessor R. E. F. Matthews, head of the department, has been granted 30,150 dollars by the American Public Health Service in conjunction with, the State Department, for research into nucleic acids and the synthesis and inhibition of viruses.

This is after a grant of 39,300 dollars to Professor Matthews and Mr R. K. Ralph, senior lecturer in the department, last year. Dr. P. L. Bergquist, research fellow in the department, has been granted 10,400 dollars from the Damon Runyon Memorial Fund for Cancer Research; to study the carcinogenic process and the chemotherapy of cancer. A further grant, of £5OO, to the post-graduate school of obstetrics and gynaecology from British Drug Houses (N.Z.), Ltd., for medical research, was received by the university council today.
