MASSACRE APPEAL
£lOOO Sent To Africa
The National Council of Churches of New Zealand is to send £lOOO to the World Council of Churches Africa Appeal. The contribution is being made in response to a cable received from the Director of the World Council of Churches' Division of Inter-Church Aid,. Refugee and World Service, commending the urgent support of churchces for the fund, received in Christchurch on Saturday, said the Associate General Secretary of the National Council (the Rev. D .M. Taylor), yesterday. The World Council of Churches issued an appeal on February 7 for one million dollars for a special fund for African emergencies after hearing reports that at least 10,000 Tutsi tribesmen have been killed by the ruling Hutu people.
The National Council of Churches of New Zealand was able to respond immediately because of its policy of setting aside for emergencies a portion of the money received through its Christmas appeal. Contributions for this appeal are being received every day, and the present total stands at £21,830, Mr Taylor said.
