Standardised Form Urged
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 17. The use of standardised tests of pupils' attainments at certain points in their school life is to be worked out in detail by a committee representing the New Zealand Council for Educational Research. the New Zealand Educational Institute, and the Department of Education, it was announced today by the Minister of Education (Mr Kinsella). The committee’s chairman will be Mr W. L. Renwick, inspector of schools, who was research officer to the Commission on Education. “A check of pupils’ abilities ait the end of Standards I and IV and Form H, using the same tests throughout the country, was a major recommendation of the Commission on Education,” said Mr Kinsella.
“Much exploratory work has already been done on this and I am anxious that further progress be made toward the construction of standardised tests that could be available to schools.” This information on the comparative performance of pupils at definite points in their schooling would enable schools to organise follow-up and remedial work for those needing it, said the Minister.
