BAND GOING TO SYDNEY
Anzac Landing Jubilee The band of the Ist Canterbury Regiment will go to Sydney in April next year to represent the New Zealand forces at the fiftieth anniversary of Gallipoli. The band will take part in the Anzac Day procession and. it is hoped, the ceremony of Beating Retreat at sunset The band will take with them the shell of the drum of the Canterbury Regiment which was used to keep bandages and field dressings on Gallipoli in 1915. The shell has never left the band since. The band will take 44 members across to Sydney. In Australia the band hopes to perform as much as possible to draw attention to the Anzac link between the countries. As the regiment has been merged with the 2nd Battalion, Royal New Zealand Artillery Regiment, the band may not retain its name. Brigadier T. C. Campbell, commanding officer, Southern Military District, said the decision on the names of territorial bands had to be made in Wellington. He thought the Canterbury band might retain its name, but it was doubtful.
