BEER IN JUGS

' Rise In Price Claimed

(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, Feb. 17.

“The Minister of Industries and Commerce pooh-poohed the idea of any rise in the price of beer prior to the General Election but it has risen in a subtle manner in New Zealand,” said Mr P. Blaiichfield, member of Parliament for Westland, speaking at the official opening of the annual conference of the New Zealand Master Grocers* Association in Grey mouth today. Mr Blanchfleld contended that hotels in metropolitan areas had reduced the size of their jugs from 42 ounces to 35 ounces, which represented a drop of one seven ounce glass to the purchaser. “The recent rise of the price of sugar from lOd to Is 3d has put the Minister on the spot and it is going to have repercussions throughout the country,’’ said Mr Blanchfleld. He said that the Government expected retailers and manufacturers to “play ball” and not unjustifiably increase the cost of items which had been released from price control.

“Unless you play ball with the Government it will have no choice but to reimpose price control,” he said.
