Suspect Notes Not Retained
(N.Z. Prtss Assn. —Copuripht) ADELAIDE, January 13. Three suspect £5 notes were detected at a race meeting at Gawler 25 miles from Adelaide, on Saturday, but they were not retained by the totalisator attendants to whom they were tendered. The attendants are believed to have handed back the three notes to a woman and two men who passed them in, telling them that the notes were suspected forgeries. The three people escaped in the crowd with the notes. In each of six similar incidents involving suspect notes in South Australia in the last fortnight, people who suspected the notes have allowed them to be taken back instead of removing them from circulation. Police yesterday again stressed the importance of shop attendants and others holding on to suspect notes if the source of the counterfeit notes now circulating in South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales was to be detected. All the forged £5 notes bear the same serial number —TC over 35794751.
