Flies
Sir,—l have just completed a tour of the house—spraying and swotting, for once more the “fly season” is at its peak. I have heard that in China and other Asian countries flies have been eradicated. Why then cannot we in New Zealand? It would need a national effort, with full cooperation from all. Plunket Mothers’ groups, women’s institutes, housewives’ unions, and numerous women’s organisations could all help to organise the campaign. It would be a great help to all women and mothers. Perhaps the Health Department could sponsor it and call for cooperation from other groups The Lions and Jaycees, to mention two, have done terrific work in other fields. I believe that all Chinese schoolchildren were given a box and a swot and had a competition to catch flies. Is there enough support in New Zealand for a move to free
our country from flies? Surely if under-developed, poverty-stricken Asian countries can do it, we can.— Yours, etc., M. McN. January 13, 1964.
