Slow Drivers

Sir, —I would like to support “Business Motorist’’ and “Non Driver’’ in their contention that the bitumen strip on many of our roads is not wide enough and many of our accidents are caused by inconsiderate drivers overtaking at speed and forcing other drivers on to the shingle and grass verges. I have always maintained that there is only one way to prevent these accident and that is to seal the road wide enough to take two lanes of traffic, slow cars and cars towing trailers or caravans to use the outside lane and faster traffic to use the centre lane. It would cost more for bitumen and labour but save many lives in the end. The safety code states motorists should keep well to the left but I know of several places on our roads where this would be positively dangerous, especially at night where one has to look out for pedestrians and unlighted cycles.—Yours, etc., S. W. HICKMOTT. January 13, 1964.
