BRITISH ARMY
Recruiting Of Chinese Urged
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, December 10.
The British Army was urged yesterday to start a recruiting drive among the Chinese. A Labour member of Parliament, Mr Reginald Paget, put forward the proposal in the House of Commons, the "Daily Mail” reported. Advocating the potential of Hong Kong and Singapore, he said: “There are few better natural mechanics than the Chinese.’’
Mr Paget asked why army recruitment should be confined to the British Isles. Half the German Army of World War n had been foreigners, he said.
Why not recruit among the Maltese, who made excellent stewards, and among Chinese, who were first-class mechanics? he asked. A Conservative, Mr Brian Harrison, agreed. He said Fiji and the Seychelles had already contributed most successfully to the British Army.
