‘PENTAGON ' IN BRITAIN
‘Costs Will Be Greater 9 (N.Z. Preu Asm.—Copyright) LONDON, Dec. 10. Britain’s "Pentagon,'• the new unified Ministry of Defence, was likely to cost more than £lO million more than the present service ministries in its first year of operation, the “Daily Telegraph” said today. It would employ more staff, and more premises, than the present Ministry lienee. Admiralty, War Office and Air Ministry. The newspaper’s reporter, John Bulloch, said he had reached this conclusion after prolonged investigtaion of proposals outlined in a Government White Paper. Bulloch said the service estimates for the current year were £lB3B million. "Yet it is admitted officially that in its first year the new Ministry of Defence will cost £2OOO million.
'"The present staffs of the Ministry fo Defence, Admiralty, War Office and Air Ministry amount to 23,900. But Ministers and service chiefs are already anticipating a total staff of 25.000 to the new Ministry of Defence. Many believe that this is a very conservative estimate,” he said.
The new Defence Ministry would come into operation on April 1.
