Nature Programme For Public At Arthur’s Pass

The Arthur’s Pass National Park Board will conduct a nature programme over two weeks of the Christmas holi{days, during which members I of the public will be able to I take part in interesting studies of bush, life, alpine 1 plants, and oilier mountain features. Several day and half-day 1 trips to features close to the township, and to nearby river valleys, are included in the I activities. The programme will begin jon January 1 with a screening of slides of the 1963 activities. The next day there {wall be a nature study trip ' to the Bridal Veil falls in the morning, and a special {teen-agers’ trip to the falls in the afternoon. A full day trip to Margaret’s Tarn and the Bealey ■ valley, with nature study and i geology of the region feat--1 ured, is set down for Janu{ary 3, followed by slides in {the evening. I Family groups will be catered for on January 4 and January 6, the first trip being a family picnic in ttie Hawdon valley, with choice of | activities including studies of j the riverbed and bush life, i and a four mile valley hike. 1 The other trip will be a I family outing on the Dobson track, with mountain studies of tarns, bog plants, and ; alpine flowers. There will be a half-day i trip to Temple Basin on January 7 with die alternative of a short climb and s.udy of alpine flowers, and i a higher climb to study scree 1 plants, land forms, and geography. The programme for January 8 is a trip to the Devil's i Punchbowl in the morning

and a walk along Scotts track in the afternoon, or alternatively a full day trip up Bealey spur to the open tops above the townhip. This programme will be repeated over the next week from January 9 to 15, with special trips for persons who took part in the first week’s programme.

In the event of wet weather an indoor programme will be arranged. including films, quizes, slides, and competitions. This will cater particularly for young persons. Where possible the park board will arrange for naturalists to be available on trips, for those wishing to make specialised studies.
