SEALING TO HERMITAGE

Other Work To Be Done First Maintenance costs have been held constant in No. 15 district (South Canterbury 1. but with the extentions of seal in the district a reduction could have been expected. Extending seal on new alignment £60.000 over the three years is mainly necessary for approaches to new bridges, Boffells Cutting on State Highway 79 (£25.000) being the exception. With work on hand at present, the small gap in the seal on State Highway 79 will be closed in the period. The major work, however, is the continuation of the seal on State Highway 8. £175,000 is planned, which win be nearly completed to Pukaki in 1965-66.

No money has been allocated to State Highway 80 tor seal extension as the District Roads Council feels that the decision on whether to proceed on State Highway 8 from Pukaki to Ohau or to turn up State Highway 80 to the Hermitage should be left until the other work is complete.

Reconstruction and strengthening works which total £44,000 in the three years are all minor. Eleven bridges have been included tn the plans, the major structure being the 940 ft North Ashburton river bridge estimated to cost £74,000.
