ALLEGED ASSAULT
Vindication Of Police (NJS. Press Assn.— Copyright) SYDNEY. Sept 11. Ths New South Wales Police Commissioner (Mr Norman Allan) was “quite satisfied” that a 19-year-oid youth had not been assaulted by police, the New South Wales Parliament was told last night. The Premier (Mr Heffron) said the evidence strongly suggested that the youth, Terrence Waterhouse, received his injuries in a brawl at a Chinese cafe before police were called. Waterhouse claimed that police had bashed him at Central Police Station on August 31. Two friends who were with Waterhouse on the night of the alleged assault also supported his claim that he was assaulted by a uniformed policeman while on the floor of the police station charge room.
Mr Heffron said the Government had accepted a re-
commendation by Mr Allan that documents in the case be referred to the Crown Law Department for independent examination.
Since the alleged bashing Waterhouse had twice been in hospital, has spent some time in bed and is still under treatment by a doctor. Mr Heffron said: “In the light of the position as disclosed by the extensive inquiries carried out, the Commissioner of Police is quite satisfied that this young man was not assaulted by any member of the police force.
