PENSIONERS’ ’PHONES
Political Accord In Sydenham Pleasure that Miss M. B Howard, member of Parliament for the district, had joined him in trying to arrange for telephones in pensioner flat blocks in the Sydenham electorate was expressed in Christchurch by Mr J. Pounsford, the Social Credit candidate for the area. Some months ago, in a statement to “The Press" Mr Pounsford disclosed that the Postmaster-General (Mr Kinsella) had written to him and was prepared to act in the matter. Mr Pounsford said that from an earlier statement by Mr Kinsella it appeared tha.t providing suitable arrangements coiiid be made with file Christchurch City Council, he would be prepared to make a telephone of the type from which outward and inward calls could be made available in pensioner flat blocks, said Mr Pounsford. “I am' hoping that Miss Howard, as a city councillor, will be able to help arrange this,” he said.
“While having a telephone in the near vicinity is a big help to these old folk, many of whom are over 70 and have great difficulty in getting about, I feel the ideal arrangement would be to have a telephone in each block ot the type from which outward and inward calls can be made,” said Mr Pounsford.
