RED CROSS IN SARAWAK

New Zealand Aid Sought In Sarawak, as in almost every other country of the world, the Red Cross Society is engaged in a programme of health education, welfare work, and relief. Recently the Red Cross Society in Sarawak commenced the huge task of registering persons who are deaf or dumb, with the intention of training them and giving them constructive aid. It was an easy task to track down these people in the towns, but great difficulties were experienced in locating the deaf and dumb in the remote areas.

Milk is in great demand, since very little is produced in the country. The New Zealand Red Cross Society has been urgently requested to send supplies for distribution to under-nourished infants attending Red Cross clinics and those discharged from hospital. As in most tropical countries. disasters in Sarawak strike suddenly and often, rendering many thousands homeless. The Red Cross Society holds large stocks of emergency supplies always ready for these disasters but because of the climate clothing cannot be kept After a disaster the Red Cross Society must purchase necessarv supplies of bedding and cloth for making up into garments. These are some of the activities that the New Zealand Red Cross Society has been asked to help from the funds raised as a result of its centenary appeal.
