Drove Tractor On Cow; Fined £l00
. (New Zealand Prvsi Association) DANNEVIRKE, December 11. David Victor Paewai. a Dannevirke dairy farmer, who pleaded guilty to aggravated .cfuelty to a cow, was fined £lOO by Mr D. G. Sinclair, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Dannevirke today.
The Magistrate said Paewai would have been sent to prison “tor a long time” had it not been for the fact the burden of milking 95 cows would have fallen on his wife.
Senior Sergeant I. A. Murray said Paewai had chased and struck the cow with a tractor. The cow jumped through a fence and Paewai chased it out of the paddock, striking it again. He then chased it around another paddock until he cow fell, exhausted. He drove the tractor over the cow, then backed it on to her and left it there. Paewai then kicked the cow. A veterinary surgeon's report said the cow died from its injuries. An S.P.C.A. official said tyre tracks led up to and beyond the cow and there were abrasions on its neck.
