TRAINING CULLERS
Decentralised Scheme
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Sept. 11 The Forest Service has been decentralising its training of deer cullers and it is n.ow being undertaken in each of the seven forest conservancies.
Last year, the service trained 121 hunters at Dip Flat in the Wairau valley. Nelson, which until recently demanded intensive culling of deer.
This area is now covered by experienced hunters to keep down the diminished numbers of deer, and forest protection rangers have been establishing training schools in each conservancy.
An officer of the department said today it was hoped the change would attract recruits with a rural background who had proved in the past to be those who gave the longest service. The senior protection forest ranger in the Canterbury conservancy has established a training centre in the Waiau catchment.
