Riccarton Pedestrian Islands

Sir, —Having read Mr T. G. Anderson’s views on these obstacles called pedestrian islands, I am pleased to thiink there are some sensible persons around with experience in modern traffic and hazards. Surely the people responsible for the erection of these unsigfaitly and dangerous ” islands” must see the danger that is being caused. Only today a small child stepped off one of these islands in the path of a car. It was just lucky there was no vehicle parked on the kerbside and toe driver was able to swerve over to avoid an accident. Where is the benefit if pedestrians do that? —Yours, etc., ROAD SAFETY MEMBER. September 11, 1963.
